Taupō

A sacred lake, and the home of our own Māori experiences.

The Region

Lake Taupō is a sacred lake ringed with sacred sites — the caldera of a volcano so large its last great eruption darkened skies over Rome and China. Today it is quieter than Rotorua, favoured by locals over tour groups, and it is the home of our own Māori experiences: the master carver here is a close friend, as is Tom Loughlin, who cooks our Māori food in the wild.

If a guest can visit only three places in New Zealand, we usually say: Auckland, Taupō, Queenstown. This is the middle third, the cultural heart of most journeys we design, delivered through friendships that took decades to earn.

A Moment We Design

A pōwhiri that isn’t a performance

A private pōwhiri arranged through long-standing community relationships — a living ceremony of welcome, by a waterfall, for your party alone. Guests consistently rank it the most meaningful hour of their journey, and it is often the moment a trip changes gear.

A Moment We Design

A day in the wild with Kai Waho

Ko Tahi Te Rā: a full day in the high country with Māori hosts — fire, kai lifted from the earth, tikanga explained around the flames, and the kind of conversation you cannot book anywhere else. It appears in nearly every journey we design, because nothing else comes close.

A Moment We Design

The carver’s workshop

A morning in the workshop of a master Māori carver, a friend of twenty years, watching whakairo take shape and understanding what each cut carries. You leave knowing why a carving is never just decoration.

When To Come

The season is part of the design

Summer gives the lake its swimming and its evenings; winter gives the lodges their fires and the trout fishery its legend. Both work.

The cultural experiences run year-round and weather-proof: fire, as Tom points out, works better in the rain.

The highlight for us was being able to spend so much time talking with Maori people about their history and culture. We would highly recommend Ahipara to anyone planning a vacation in New Zealand.

The lodges that live here

A handful of the places we place guests in Taupō. Each carries a dossier: who it suits, the nights it deserves, how we set it inside a journey.
