Before the Itinerary
Why We Begin With What to Leave Out
On a map, adrift in the Pacific, New Zealand can look like a small island. It is not. The country is larger than the United Kingdom and runs close to the length of Italy. With almost no motorways, sixteen hours of driving separates the top of an island from its bottom.
We count fifteen distinct parts of New Zealand (our twenty-three regional guides explore them in finer detail), each with its own landscape, culture and story, each worth three unhurried nights. That is forty-five days, and almost no one has forty-five days. So the first thing we do is not add to a list; it is prioritise — around who you are, how you like to travel, and what you most want to feel. The itinerary follows from that conversation, never the other way around.
And when travellers ask whether to choose the North Island or the South, our answer is almost always both. The warm, Pacific, deeply Māori North is a different country to the grand, empty, alpine South. In twenty-five years, we have never had a guest regret seeing the two.
“
What is ultimate for one traveller is worthless to the next.
When Robb Report ranked Ahipara among the ten best travel companies in the world, its editors asked Jean-Michel for the firm's ultimate New Zealand itinerary. He declined to give one — and that refusal is the whole idea. In twenty-five years, not one Ahipara journey has ever been repeated.

The Process
How a Journey Comes Together
01
Begin the Conversation
"Something completely unlike anything I've done before" is a perfectly good starting point. We listen, ask questions, and begin to understand what will make your journey yours.

02
We Craft Your Itinerary
Within 5–7 days, we present a full itinerary, day by day, built entirely around your brief.

03
Refine Until Perfect
We expect revisions. Swap lodges, add experiences, strip things out until the itinerary feels exactly right. Most clients take two to four rounds of refinement.

04
We Book Everything
Accommodation, private guides, helicopter transfers, restaurant reservations, cultural experience access, transport. One comprehensive confirmation document. Nothing left to chance.

05
Travel with Confidence
Throughout your journey, Ahipara is available via WhatsApp. If a helicopter is grounded by weather, alternatives are already arranged. Every contingency anticipated.

06
We Stay in Touch
The relationship doesn't end when you fly home. Return guest benefits, early access to new itineraries, and a team that remembers the details of your last journey.
