Huka Lodge
Taupō, North Island
A century on the river, and still the one the others measure themselves against.
The Lodge
Huka Lodge is where New Zealand’s lodge tradition began, with a fishing camp pitched on the banks of the Waikato River in 1924, a kilometre upstream of Huka Falls. A century later it remains the benchmark: twenty-five suites along the river under giant redwoods, run with a formality that never quite tips into ceremony.
Royalty has stayed here for decades and the lodge has learned the discretion that comes with that. What the photographs undersell is the sound — the Waikato moving past the lawn, fast and glass-green, from every suite.
We place guests at Huka when a journey needs its first deep breath: it sits an easy drive or a short flight from Auckland, and Taupō’s trout water, geothermal country and back-country stations radiate from it in every direction.
The Practicalities, Honestly
The Nights It Deserves
Two as a pause, three if the river matters to you.
Who It Suits
First visits to New Zealand; anyone for whom the word "institution" is a recommendation rather than a warning. Fly-fishers, obviously.
When To Go
October to April for the full river-and-garden effect. Winter is quieter, log-fired and arguably more romantic. Taupō does crisp better than most.
Getting There
Forty minutes’ flight from Auckland to Taupō, then ten by car. Helicopter transfers land on the lawn.
From Our Notes
What twenty-five years of placing guests here has taught us
01
Ask for a suite at the quiet end of the river path. The water is the point, and the furthest rooms hear nothing else. Families and small groups should look at the two cottages instead: each runs as a private house with its own pool, chef optional.
02
Dinner is still a production in the old style, with a different setting each night if you want it: the wine cellar, the library, a pavilion by the river. Tell us before you arrive and we will have the right evenings held.
03
The trout fishing is very good, but the better move is to let us send you out with one of the Taupō guides we have used for years — wild rivers within a half-hour helicopter arc that see almost nobody.
How We Place It
Huka opens a North Island chapter naturally: culture and geothermal country at Rotorua to the north, Poronui’s back-country valleys to the east, and Hawke’s Bay over the ranges. We often use it as the composed first act before the wilder second.
Huka Lodge, placed properly
A lodge is only ever one piece of a journey. Tell us what drew you here and we will design the days around it: the right nights, the right season, the right hands.
