Luxury Lodges · The Sporting Estate
Poronui
Taupō, North Island
Sixteen thousand acres, a river full of trout, and no fences to speak of.
The Lodge
Poronui is a sixteen-thousand-acre estate in the mountains south of Taupō, given over to the country pursuits New Zealand does best: fly fishing, hunting, and riding across land that runs to the horizon. It is a working sporting property first and a lodge second, which is precisely its appeal.
Guests stay either in the lodge or, in the warmer months, at the Safari Camp — canvas-walled suites pitched by the Taharua River, dinner around a fire, the sound of water all night. Both put you on some of the finest trout water in the country.
We send guests to Poronui when the pull of a journey is active rather than scenic: a place to do things, guided by people who have fished and hunted this ground for years. It sits within a helicopter’s reach of Huka and the whole central plateau.

The Practicalities, Honestly
The Nights It Deserves
Three. The fishing and the riding both reward a full day, and the estate is too big to rush.
Who It Suits
Fly-fishers above all, then riders and shooting parties. Anyone happier in boots than by a pool. Not the choice for a purely restful stay.
When To Go
The Safari Camp runs roughly November to April, the prime fishing window. The lodge stays open year-round; winter brings the hunting and a quieter, fire-lit estate.
Getting There
Forty minutes by road from Taupō, or a short helicopter hop that lands on the estate.
From Our Notes
What twenty-five years of placing guests here has taught us
01
The Safari Camp is the experience to choose if the weather allows; it is closer to the river and the better story. The lodge and its houses suit families and colder months.
02
Book the guides early and by name through us; Poronui’s river beats are rotated, and the best water on a given day is a matter of local knowledge rather than the booking form.
03
Non-anglers are well looked after, with clay shooting, archery, horse trekking into the back country, and a spa cabin by the river. It is not a fishing camp that forgets its other guests.
How We Place It
Poronui and Huka make a natural North Island pair — the composed river lodge and the working sporting estate, twenty minutes apart by air. From either, Hawke’s Bay and Rotorua are within an easy morning’s reach.
Poronui, placed properly
A lodge is only ever one piece of a journey. Tell us what drew you here and we will design the days around it: the right nights, the right season, the right hands.
