Accessible Travel

Every Guest Deserves
an Extraordinary Journey

Private travel has one great advantage: it can be designed entirely around you. Whatever your needs, we design experiences that are accessible, without compromising on what makes them extraordinary.

Our Approach

Private travel means
designed for you

Group travel imposes its itinerary on everyone in it. Private travel has no such constraint. Every Ahipara journey is designed from scratch, which means we can design it around any access requirement, any mobility consideration, and any personal need.

We do not have an "accessible travel package." We have the same approach we use for every guest: a conversation about what matters to you, what your constraints are, and what extraordinary looks like for your specific situation. Then we design accordingly.

New Zealand has extraordinary experiences that do not require physical ability — and extraordinary accessible routes to experiences that seem physically demanding. A helicopter removes the trail. A private vehicle removes the crowd. A specialist guide removes the uncertainty. That is what we do.

Access Considerations

How We Design for Every Guest

Mobility & Wheelchair Access

New Zealand's greatest lodges are not all equally accessible — and we know which ones are. We assess every property against the specific needs of each guest: step-free access, bathroom adaptations, ground-floor rooms, accessible vehicle transfers, and helicopter alternatives to difficult terrain.

We can arrange

  • ✓Huka Lodge: fully accessible river suite available
  • ✓Private helicopter access to otherwise inaccessible wilderness
  • ✓Accessible vehicle transfers throughout
  • ✓Pre-arrival property inspection on request

Neurodiversity & Sensory Needs

We design itineraries that work for guests with autism, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and other neurodivergent profiles. This means the right balance of stimulation and rest, flexibility built into every day, and briefings that prepare guests for new environments before they arrive.

We can arrange

  • ✓Flexible daily schedules with rest built in
  • ✓Advance briefing documents for all experiences
  • ✓Private rather than shared activities throughout
  • ✓Properties with low-stimulation environments on request

Hearing & Vision Support

We work with specialist guides and interpreters for guests with hearing or vision impairments, and select experiences that translate across sensory modes: the sound of Milford, the texture of pounamu, the geography of a valley explained tactilely.

We can arrange

  • ✓NZSL-qualified guides on request
  • ✓Audio-description briefings for landscape experiences
  • ✓Tactile pounamu carving sessions
  • ✓Large-print and audio itinerary formats

Health & Medical Considerations

We design itineraries with full awareness of guests' medical needs, including altitude, exertion levels, dietary requirements, and proximity to medical facilities. Our specialists are experienced in designing extraordinary experiences that stay within appropriate health parameters.

We can arrange

  • ✓Medical facility proximity mapping for all stops
  • ✓Exertion-level grading for all activities
  • ✓Dietary requirements managed across all properties
  • ✓Medical equipment transfer assistance on request

Age & Multigenerational Travel

We design exceptional multigenerational itineraries that work for guests aged 4–94. Grandparents who cannot hike still deserve to see the Southern Alps from the air. Children who cannot sit through a long dinner still deserve extraordinary food experiences. We design around every member of the group.

We can arrange

  • ✓Staggered activity options within group itineraries
  • ✓Child-friendly alternatives at every stop
  • ✓Accessible vehicle options for elderly guests
  • ✓Pacing designed around the least mobile guest

A Note on Disclosure

The more we know, the better we can design. We treat everything you tell us about access and health with discretion. It is shared only within the Ahipara team and with the lodges, guides and drivers who need it to look after you, and it is used for nothing else.

We would rather know everything upfront than make assumptions. If you are uncertain whether something is relevant, tell us anyway. We have heard everything and nothing surprises us.

No requirement is too specific. Start the conversation and we'll show you what's possible.
