Solitaire Lodge
Lake Tarawera, Rotorua
A private peninsula on a volcanic lake, with the mountain that made it in full view.
The Lodge
Solitaire Lodge occupies a private peninsula reaching into Lake Tarawera, outside Rotorua, facing the brooding mass of Mount Tarawera itself — the volcano whose 1886 eruption buried the famous Pink and White Terraces beneath the lake. Few lodges in the country have a more charged view.
The lodge is small and contemporary, given over almost entirely to the water and the mountain; most suites look straight down the lake. It is a place built around a single, enormous outlook rather than a long list of things to do.
We use Solitaire when a North Island journey wants Rotorua’s geothermal drama and Māori culture without staying in the town. Trout fishing, kayaking and the buried village are on the doorstep, and the setting alone earns a night.
The Practicalities, Honestly
The Nights It Deserves
Two. One for the lake and the culture, one to sit with the view. It is that kind of place.
Who It Suits
Guests drawn to geothermal country and Māori culture; anglers; couples who want a single spectacular outlook over a busy programme.
When To Go
Year-round: the geothermal attractions and culture do not have a season. Summer for the lake and the trout; the shoulder months are quiet and green.
Getting There
Around thirty minutes from Rotorua airport; helicopters land at the lodge.
From Our Notes
What twenty-five years of placing guests here has taught us
01
Every suite faces the lake, but the higher ones have the cleaner line to Mount Tarawera — ask for one. The lodge is small, so a quiet booking has it almost to yourselves.
02
The trout fishing on Tarawera and the nearby lakes is excellent, and the guides we use know the buried village and the geothermal valleys as well as the water. Book them for both.
03
Rotorua’s Māori cultural experiences are among the most authentic in the country when arranged privately rather than as a coach-tour show. We set the private version; it is a different thing entirely.
How We Place It
Solitaire pairs with Huka Lodge across the central plateau (geothermal lake and trout river within an hour of each other) to make a North Island chapter of water, culture and volcanic country.
Solitaire Lodge, placed properly
A lodge is only ever one piece of a journey. Tell us what drew you here and we will design the days around it: the right nights, the right season, the right hands.
