Rotorua's crater lakes and forest seen from the air

Rotorua

The oldest tourist town in the country. Reinvented, quietly.

The Region

Rotorua is New Zealand’s traditional tourist capital: geysers, boiling mud, and the deepest living Māori culture in the country. It has been welcoming visitors since the 1870s, and for decades the coaches have dominated it. Quiet, exceptional ways through it now exist, and we are investing real time here to help bring them to life.

The trick is altitude and hours: Tarawera at sunrise from a helicopter, the thermal valleys after the gates close, and the living lakeside village of Ōhinemutu with someone who grew up in it. Same wonders, different world.

Tarawera at first light

Mt Tarawera tore itself apart in 1886 and buried the famous Pink and White Terraces; its rent crater is still raw. By helicopter at sunrise you land on the rim before anyone else is airborne, walk the crater’s edge, and read the whole volcanic plateau in the morning light.

Into the crater

Standing on the crater rim of an active volcanic system, steam rising through the scoria at your feet, recalibrates your sense of what this country is: very young, very alive. Guided privately, with the geology explained by people who love it.

The lake the coaches never find

Lake Tarawera sits one ridge beyond the town and belongs to another century — trout water, bush edges, and a solitary lodge on its peninsula. Dinner here, with the volcano fading across the water, is Rotorua’s best-kept secret hiding in plain sight.

When To Come

The season is part of the design

Geothermal country improves in cold air: the steam doubles, the crowds halve. A winter morning at a thermal valley, breath and geyser indistinguishable, is the connoisseur’s Rotorua.

Summer belongs to the lakes: trout at dawn, water-skiing at noon, and long evenings on the trout water. The culture, of course, keeps no season at all.

A Journey That Lingers Here

From the Gulf to the High Country

The Volcanic Extremes day lives inside this journey — a master carver’s morning, a helicopter flight over Tarawera, and private after-hours access to the Wai-O-Tapu thermal wonderland.
