The Lindis
Ahuriri Valley, Mackenzie Country
A sculptural roof in an empty valley, and the darkest skies in the country.
The Lodge
The Lindis stands alone in the Ahuriri Valley, a remote sweep of merino high country in the Mackenzie. Its sculptural, undulating roof, designed to sit into the landscape rather than on it, has made it one of the most photographed buildings in New Zealand, and one of the most quietly radical.
There are only five suites in the main lodge, plus a handful of pods and a private homestead scattered across the station. The scale is deliberate: this is a place for stillness, big weather and a night sky largely untouched by light.
We place The Lindis when a journey wants the empty grandeur of the interior — the tussock, the braided rivers, the Southern Alps at a distance. It fishes well, walks well, and does nothing at all beautifully.

The Practicalities, Honestly
The Nights It Deserves
Two, though the valley has a way of making guests wish they had booked three.
Who It Suits
Lovers of architecture, quiet and dark skies; fly-fishers; couples who read the word "remote" as a promise. Not for anyone who needs a town nearby.
When To Go
Summer for the long light and the rivers; winter for snow on the tops and a lodge that feels like the only warm room for miles. The stargazing is year-round and exceptional.
Getting There
Roughly an hour and a half by road from Queenstown or Wānaka; a helicopter landing brings it much closer.
From Our Notes
What twenty-five years of placing guests here has taught us
01
The Mezzanine and Owner’s suites have the best valley aspect; the standalone pods suit those who want to feel entirely alone. The homestead takes a family or group.
02
This is dark-sky country. Ask for the astronomy session on a clear night, and eat late so the sky has time to arrive.
03
The fishing on the Ahuriri is the draw for anglers, but the walking straight from the door is underrated. Take a guided high-country walk and let the scale of the place land.
How We Place It
The Lindis anchors the high-country heart of a slow South Island journey — paired with Fiordland to the west and the Queenstown lakes to the south, with nothing but tussock and sky in between.
The Lindis, placed properly
A lodge is only ever one piece of a journey. Tell us what drew you here and we will design the days around it: the right nights, the right season, the right hands.
