The Landing

Bay of Islands, Northland

A thousand acres of Bay of Islands waterfront, with its own vineyard and jetty.

The Lodge

The Landing occupies a thousand acres of the Purerua Peninsula in the Bay of Islands — private residences set across one of the most beautiful, and most historically significant, stretches of coast in New Zealand. This is where Māori first settled the bay and where Europeans first arrived; the land carries all of it.

Rather than a lodge with rooms, The Landing is a collection of architecturally serious private homes, each with its own outlook over the water, plus a vineyard, a jetty and a helipad. You take a house and the estate arranges itself around you.

We place The Landing when privacy and the sea are the brief in the Far North: sailing, diving, island picnics and long empty beaches, with the option of complete self-containment. It is the warm-water counterpart to the alpine south.

The Practicalities, Honestly

The Nights It Deserves

Two to three. The bay is best explored slowly, by boat, without a schedule.

Who It Suits

Families and groups wanting a private house; sailors and divers; anyone for whom the Bay of Islands, on the water, is the point of coming north.

When To Go

November to April for warm water and settled sailing. The bay is at its emptiest either side of the summer school holidays.

Getting There

A short flight from Auckland to Kerikeri, then a brief transfer; the estate has its own helipad and marina.

From Our Notes

What twenty-five years of placing guests here has taught us

01

Take a residence with its own water frontage. The estate’s houses vary, and we will match the one to your party and the view you want to wake to.

02

The bay is meant to be travelled by boat: a private day under sail to an island beach, a picnic put ashore, and the water to yourselves. It is the single day we build into almost every stay.

03

The estate’s own vineyard and the historical sites on the land reward a guided morning — the story of first contact is told here better than anywhere in the country. Ask for it.

How We Place It

The Landing and Kauri Cliffs sit a short hop apart in the Far North, and together they make a slow northern coast of sailing, golf and empty beaches before a journey turns south to the mountains.

The Landing, placed properly

A lodge is only ever one piece of a journey. Tell us what drew you here and we will design the days around it: the right nights, the right season, the right hands.
