Otahuna Lodge, a Victorian homestead, above a field of daffodils in Canterbury

Otahuna Lodge

Tai Tapu, Canterbury

One of the country’s great historic houses, with a kitchen garden to match.

The Lodge

Otahuna Lodge is a grand 1895 Queen Anne homestead in the countryside south of Christchurch — once the private residence of the politician and horticulturist Sir Heaton Rhodes, and among the largest of its era in New Zealand. It is one of the finest historic houses the country lets you sleep in.

There are seven suites within the house, and the walled kitchen garden is the heart of the operation: much of what appears at dinner is grown metres away, and the cooking is some of the most serious in the South Island. In spring the grounds turn gold with a million naturalised daffodils Rhodes himself planted.

We place Otahuna when a journey passes through Canterbury and wants history and a table rather than mountains: a civilised first or last night near Christchurch, or a gastronomic pause between the coast and the high country.

The Practicalities, Honestly

The Nights It Deserves

Two: one for the house and garden, one for the region, though many come simply to eat and stay put.

Who It Suits

Lovers of history, houses and gardens; serious food-and-wine travellers; couples wanting intimacy over grandeur. An easy, elegant bookend to a South Island trip.

When To Go

September for the daffodils; late summer and autumn for the kitchen garden at full tilt. The house is warm and candlelit in winter.

Getting There

Twenty-five minutes from Christchurch airport. It is the most convenient of the South Island lodges to reach.

From Our Notes

What twenty-five years of placing guests here has taught us

01

The suites in the original house carry the most character; ask for one of the larger ones on the garden side. The whole house can be taken exclusively for a family or group.

02

Dinner is the reason to be here. The set menu is drawn from the garden, paired with a deep South Island cellar. Come hungry and leave the evening open.

03

Otahuna makes the ideal soft landing straight off a long-haul flight into Christchurch, or the last civilised night before departure. Use it as a bookend and the journey between can be as wild as you like.

How We Place It

Otahuna sits close to Christchurch, which makes it the natural gateway to a South Island journey — a night of house and garden before the high country, Kaikōura’s coast, or the road west to the Alps.

Otahuna Lodge, placed properly

A lodge is only ever one piece of a journey. Tell us what drew you here and we will design the days around it: the right nights, the right season, the right hands.
