Matakauri Lodge on the shore of Lake Wakatipu with the Remarkables rising behind

Luxury Lodges · Seven Minutes From Town

Matakauri Lodge

Queenstown, Otago

Queenstown’s scenery with Queenstown nowhere in sight.

The Lodge

Matakauri Lodge sits on a terrace above Lake Wakatipu seven minutes’ drive from Queenstown, facing Walter and Cecil Peaks across the water. It is the town-adjacent lodge done properly: close enough for dinner reservations, angled so you would never know.

Built as one of the Robertson family’s three New Zealand lodges (with Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers), it now flies the Rosewood flag, and the polish shows in the details: eleven suites, a spa cut into the hillside, and the best breakfast room aspect in the South Island.

We use Matakauri when a journey wants Queenstown’s helicopter reach and restaurant scene without a hotel in town — which, for our guests, is nearly always.

The Practicalities, Honestly

The Nights It Deserves

Two to three, depending on how hard the helicopters will be working.

Who It Suits

Guests who want the southern lakes with the volume turned down, and couples marking something. The suite fireplaces do half the work.

When To Go

Year-round in the true sense: summer for the terrace and the lake, winter for snow on the Remarkables and the pick of the region’s tables. Shoulder months are the quiet secret.

Getting There

Seven minutes from central Queenstown; twelve from the airport. Helicopters stage from the lodge’s own pad.

From Our Notes

What twenty-five years of placing guests here has taught us

01

The Owner’s Cottage is one of the country’s great private stays — four suites, its own pool and kitchen, and a hillside to itself. For multi-generation family parties it solves everything at once.

02

Book dinner at the lodge for the first night and let us handle the town tables after. Queenstown’s restaurant scene rewards knowing which rooms to sit in and which nights to avoid.

03

The spa’s lakeview treatment rooms are the right way to absorb an arrival day after the long-haul flight; we schedule them before guests think to ask.

04

From the lodge pad, Milford Sound is a morning, the Dart Valley an afternoon, and a high-country station lunch sits in between. Tell us your appetite for flying and we will compose the days around it.

How We Place It

Matakauri pairs naturally with Blanket Bay: town-reach first, head-of-the-lake wildness second, without repeating a single view. Central Otago’s vineyards and the road to Wānaka both begin at its gate.

Matakauri Lodge, placed properly

A lodge is only ever one piece of a journey. Tell us what drew you here and we will design the days around it: the right nights, the right season, the right hands.
