Mahu Whenua

Between Wānaka & Arrowtown, Otago

A hundred thousand acres of high country, and usually no one else on it.

The Lodge

Mahu Whenua spans a hundred thousand acres of high country in the Motatapu and Soho valleys between Wānaka and Arrowtown — the largest private conservation covenant in New Zealand. The name means "healing the land", and a long programme of regeneration is exactly what is underway across it.

Guests stay in one of four restored homesteads, each self-contained and hosted, scattered far enough apart that you rarely see another. This is not a lodge with rooms so much as a wilderness with houses in it — and a former celebrity estate, which accounts for the quality of the restoration.

We send guests to Mahu Whenua when privacy is the whole brief. The scale means a day’s riding, walking or four-wheel-driving without leaving the property or meeting a soul, an increasingly rare thing to be able to promise.

The Practicalities, Honestly

The Nights It Deserves

Two to three. The distances inside the estate reward giving it real time.

Who It Suits

Those for whom total privacy and space are the luxury: families and groups taking a whole homestead, and anyone who rides, walks or simply wants no one else in view.

When To Go

Late spring to autumn for the high-country trails at their best; winter turns the tops white and the homesteads snug. The regeneration story is worth the guided telling year-round.

Getting There

Around forty minutes from Wānaka or Queenstown to the valley, then into the estate; helicopters land on the property.

From Our Notes

What twenty-five years of placing guests here has taught us

01

Take a whole homestead rather than a single suite if the party allows. The point of Mahu Whenua is having a piece of the high country to yourselves, hosted and catered.

02

The land is the experience: go out with the guides on horseback or by four-wheel drive, and let them tell the regeneration story — the covenant, the pest control, the returning birds. It reframes the whole stay.

03

It pairs unusually well with the busier Queenstown lodges; a night in town, then two here, and guests feel they have crossed into another country entirely.

How We Place It

Mahu Whenua is the wilderness heart between the Queenstown and Wānaka lakes. We set it against a night or two of town at Eichardt’s or Matakauri, so the contrast between company and complete solitude does the work.

Mahu Whenua, placed properly

A lodge is only ever one piece of a journey. Tell us what drew you here and we will design the days around it: the right nights, the right season, the right hands.
