Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses

Kaikōura, South Island

Tree-house suites above a deer park, with whales down the road.

The Lodge

Hapuku Lodge sits on the Kaikōura coast where the Seaward Kaikōura Range drops almost straight into the Pacific — one of the few places on earth mountains and deep ocean meet this closely. It is family-run, by the Wilsons, and feels it in the best way.

The tree-house suites are the signature: raised on poles into a canopy of native kānuka above a working deer park, glass-walled, private. It is a design idea that could have been a gimmick and instead is the reason people remember the place.

We use Hapuku as the coastal counterpoint on a South Island journey. Kaikōura’s deep trench brings sperm whales, dusky dolphins and albatross within a short boat or flight, and the lodge’s own olive grove and honey give dinner a genuine sense of place.

The Practicalities, Honestly

The Nights It Deserves

Two. One for the whales and the coast, one to do very little among the trees.

Who It Suits

Wildlife lovers, families, and anyone charmed by the tree-house idea (most people are). A relaxed, unstuffy lodge: no dress code, no ceremony.

When To Go

Marine wildlife is year-round, but October to April gives the calmest seas for whale watching. Kaikōura’s light in autumn is exceptional.

Getting There

Two hours by road from Christchurch up the coast, or a short flight to Kaikōura; the drive itself is part of the pleasure.

From Our Notes

What twenty-five years of placing guests here has taught us

01

Ask for a tree-house suite rather than a garden room. The whole point is to wake in the canopy with the mountains through the glass. Families can take a two-bedroom tree house.

02

Whale watching goes by boat or by air. The flight is the better bet when swells are up, and far less time lost; we book it either way and switch on the morning’s forecast.

03

The lodge grows its own olives and keeps bees; dinner leans on both. Kaikōura’s other great table is a roadside crayfish shack — ask us which one, and go at lunch.

How We Place It

Hapuku threads a South Island journey between Marlborough’s wine country to the north and the high country and Fiordland to the south — the coastal chapter that stops a two-island trip becoming all mountains.
