The Long Night
Fiordland & the Winter Sky
June to August in Fiordland and the Mackenzie: a private vessel on the still fiords, dark-sky evenings with an astronomer, and whole lodges for families and small parties. Designed around firelight and silence.
The Brief
Designed for the quiet season
Designed for those who want what New Zealand rarely offers in summer: the whole place, quiet. The 2026 Virtuoso Luxe Report calls freedom from crowds "the new luxury"; winter here is its purest form.
“The same lodges, guides and helicopters as February, with the country to yourself. We designed this journey around what winter does best here: full waterfalls, snow to the waterline, the year's clearest night skies, and lodges that can be taken entire.”
The Ahipara Design Team · Ahipara Luxury Travel
Every Ahipara itinerary is designed from scratch. This journey exists to whet your appetite and give us a launching-off point. Longer or shorter, more active or less: it's your trip, and we design it around you.

Priced by conversation: a full-lodge buy-out for a multi-generation family is a different design from a couple's ten nights. Winter is never discounted: the season is the feature, not a rate. Our management fee is 8.5% of total trip cost, disclosed upfront and set out in writing.
The Route
4 stays, one thread
Day by Day
The whole journey, unfolded

Leg 01 · Days 1–3
Matakauri Lodge
Queenstown · 3 nights
Arrive Queenstown, fires lit
Snow on the Remarkables, fires lit at Matakauri, a single malt poured. For a multi-generation family, the lodge can be taken entire.
Snow-line helicopter day
Backcountry landings above the snow line, an alpine picnic in the snow, and untracked country in every direction.
Hot pools and the winter table
Private hot pools above the Shotover, then a long winter dinner in Queenstown. This journey is built around warmth, deliberately.

Leg 02 · Days 4–5
Private vessel · the fiord overnight
Milford Sound, Fiordland · 2 nights
The Milford Road in winter, sleep on the fiord
Through the Homer Tunnel in the road's quietest season, to board a private vessel on Milford Sound. The last day boats leave by mid-afternoon; after that, the fiord is yours.
The fiord at full volume
Winter waterfalls at their heaviest, kayaks on black-mirror water, snow to the waterline, and no other vessel in sight.

Leg 03 · Days 6–8
Fiordland Lodge
Te Anau, Fiordland · 3 nights
Ashore to firelight
Fiordland Lodge for three nights: log fires, long views over Lake Te Anau, and in winter, very likely the place nearly to yourselves.
The long night itself
The journey's namesake: an evening under Fiordland's winter sky with a private astronomer — the Milky Way core overhead, and the year's longest, clearest darkness.
Preservation, Dusky & Doubtful
A day by helicopter over three fiords almost nobody reaches, in low winter light, with the tops white.

Leg 04 · Days 9–11
Matuka Lodge
Mackenzie Country · 2 nights
The Lindis Pass in snow, to the Mackenzie
North through the white pass to Matuka Lodge in the Mackenzie Basin, inside the world's largest dark-sky reserve.
The High Altitude Whisky Bar
By helicopter to a mountaintop dram above the basin, then a final evening of southern stars, sharpest in winter, when the air is stillest.
Departure
Out via Christchurch, with native trees planted through Trees That Count — and the quiet season now a shared secret.
Make it yours
