West Coast

Very remote, very related, and open only to those who linger.

The Region

The West Coast is six hundred kilometres of rainforest, glacier and grey-green river squeezed between the Southern Alps and the Tasman Sea, a place so remote that everyone knows everyone, and is usually related to them. Franz Josef draws the coaches; the rest of the coast barely notices visitors at all.

This region only gives itself up to those who linger. Three to five days, at least — or it never opens to you at all. Our local contacts take you under its skin: hidden hikes, backcountry helicopters into valleys no road has ever reached, and the workshop of a master greenstone carver.

A Moment We Design

The glaciers, properly

From the air, the glaciers reveal what the valley floor cannot: blue ice falling eight kilometres from the alps to the rainforest. A full-day helicopter with snow landings, glacier lakes, and lunch somewhere with no name — often called the most spectacular flying in the country, by people who have flown everywhere.

The carver of Hokitika

Pounamu (greenstone) may only be gifted, never bought for oneself, and its true source rivers are known to few. Time with master carver Bevan Climo in Hokitika, watching stone become taonga, is the West Coast’s culture in its purest form.

A Moment We Design

Where no road has been

A backcountry helicopter day into country that has never seen a vehicle: river flats, hanging valleys, and rainforest that closes over its own silence. The Coast’s emptiness is not a marketing line; it is a fact you can stand in.

When To Come

The season is part of the design

It rains on the Coast — properly, warmly, theatrically — and the rainforest, the waterfalls and the mood all depend on it. We plan around the fronts, and the clear days between them are the finest anywhere.

Winter is the secret: stable weather, snow low on the alps, glaciers at their bluest, and the whole coast to yourself.

Being with you and getting to know you was fun. That was a special overnight on the Landsborough River.
